Sumeet (Sonu) Dhanju-Dhillon, AccBD

Sumeet (Sonu) Dhanju-Dhillon is a partner in Torkin Manes’ Litigation Group and a respected leader within the firm and broader legal community. She maintains a sophisticated civil and commercial litigation practice focused on complex business disputes, advising corporations, shareholders, partnerships and entrepreneurs on matters involving breach of contract, governance and shareholder conflicts, partnership disputes, real estate litigation and technology-related claims.

Sonu is known for pairing rigorous legal analysis with sharp commercial instinct. She is frequently called upon to guide clients through high-stakes disputes arising from corporate transactions, governance breakdowns and fractured business relationships. Her approach is strategic and pragmatic: she assesses risk not in isolation, but in the context of each client’s broader business objectives, reputation and long-term positioning.

To her clients, Sonu serves as both advocate and strategic advisor. She provides clear, candid guidance grounded in experience and detailed case analysis, distilling complex legal issues into practical, business-focused options. Mindful of proportionality and the realities of operating a business, she designs litigation strategies that are creative, disciplined and results-driven.

A distinguishing feature of Sonu’s practice is her commitment to understanding the operational realities of her clients’ businesses. She regularly invests time onsite - whether walking a construction project in a hardhat or working closely with executive teams - ensuring her legal strategy aligns with operational pressures and boardroom priorities.

Beyond her practice, Sonu plays a significant governance role. She is a member of Torkin Manes’ Management Committee, where she contributes to firm strategy and long-term planning. She previously served as Co-Chair of the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and, in 2024, chaired the Mid-Career Advocates’ Standing Committee of The Advocates’ Society, supporting the development and advancement of litigators across the profession. In 2025, she was appointed Chair of the Crohn’s and Colitis Board, further reflecting her commitment to institutional leadership and stewardship.

Her professional excellence has been widely recognized. Sonu received the Legal Excellence Award from the South Asian Bar Association in 2023. She was named a Female Trailblazer of the Year Excellence Awardee at the 2021 Canadian Law Awards and was recognized as a Lexpert Rising Star: Leading Lawyers Under 40 in 2018. She has also been ranked as a Benchmark Litigation Future Star. She recently completed the Leadership in Law Firms program at Harvard Law School.
