Matt Maurer ^*

A partner in our Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group, Matt is a trial, appellate and arbitration counsel with more than 20 years of experience acting for businesses, shareholders and executives in high-stakes commercial disputes. He is known for his incisive advocacy and his commercial judgment and for quickly identifying the most effective path to the result his clients need. 

Matt's practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, including:

• shareholder disputes and oppression remedy claims
• civil fraud claims, including tracing and asset recovery
• Mareva injunctions and other urgent interlocutory relief
• contract, tort and statutory claims arising from business and commercial relationships
  

Matt regularly appears before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and Ontario's appellate courts, as well as the courts of British Columbia and Alberta. He also has a busy arbitration practice and routinely acts as counsel in domestic and international arbitrations. Clients value his ability to cut through complexity, identify what matters most, and stay focused on their commercial objectives from the first strategy session through trial or appeal. 

Matt also holds mediation accreditation from Harvard and serves as a neutral in commercial, shareholder, franchise and cannabis-related disputes.

Matt is widely recognized as one of Canada's leading cannabis lawyers. He chairs the firm's Cannabis Law Group and has received numerous peer- and client-selected awards for his cannabis regulatory work. He has advised industry stakeholders in Canada and internationally, including American and international celebrities in their dealings with Canadian cannabis companies, and he brings that industry knowledge to cannabis-related disputes as well as to his regulatory practice.

As Chair of the firm's Franchise Law Group, Matt also acts for franchisors and franchisees in franchise litigation and on related disclosure and agreement matters.

Matt is a frequent media commentator and conference speaker on cannabis law and commercial litigation, and he is an editor of the Torkin Manes Cannabis Law Group blog.
