AdvocateDaily.com

Toronto employment and health lawyer Lisa Corrente will share her insights on investigating complaints of sexual violence at an upcoming Osgoode Professional Development forum.

Corrente, partner with Torkin Manes LLP, says professionals working in this area must be able to provide guidance and adeptly respond to the range of issues that can arise in the complex arena that is campus sexual violence.

The panel will examine best practices for internal and external investigations and provide strategies for selecting an investigator with sufficient neutrality and training, as well as implementing a communication protocol for sharing the outcome.

The event is targeted to professionals working in post-secondary institutions and high schools and will provide attendees with the tools to effectively respond to the increasingly complex issue of campus sexual violence, organizers say.

Attendees will:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of key procedural issues: the complaint, interim measures, the investigation, adjudication and alternative resolutions
  • Obtain strategies and best practices for ensuring procedural fairness throughout the process
  • Learn critical terms and concepts including, what is sexual violence, consent, a complaint and who has standing to file a complaint?
  • Receive an in-depth overview of the legal framework — the key legislation and laws that govern campus sexual violence, including Bill 132, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Human Rights codes
  • Understand how criminal and campus complaints processes intersect
  • Acquire tools for navigating privacy and confidentiality challenges
  • Understand the range of penalty options, including enforcement.

The forum will be held over three days from May 6 to 9. The panel featuring Corrente takes place on May 7 from 1:45-3:45 p.m. at the Osgoode Professional Development Centre, 1 Dundas St. W., 26th floor in Toronto.
